But even as Jesus said this, a crowd approached, led by Judas, one of the twelve disciples. Judas walked over to Jesus to greet Him with a kiss. But Jesus said, “Judas, would you betray the Son of Man with a kiss?” When the other disciples saw what was about to happen, they exclaimed, “Lord, should we fight? We brought the swords!” And one of them struck at the high priest’s slave, slashing off his right ear. But Jesus said, “No more of this.”And He touched the man’s ear and healed him. Then Jesus spoke to the leading priests, the captains of the Temple guard, and the elders who had come for Him. “Am I some dangerous revolutionary,”He asked, “that you come with swords and clubs to arrest Me? Why didn’t you arrest Me in the Temple? I was there every day. But this is your moment, the time when the power of darkness reigns.”
Luke 22:47-53
I am sure you know the drill by now, but in order to instill the process in your mind and habit, I will leave you to do it again. We have come to another sense unit and so need to do our groundwork in preparation for digging deeper into the unit before us. So once again, use all the resources at your disposal to help you do what you need to do in preparation for this segment. There are a number of questions which need to be asked in order to hone our understanding of the passage before us. Also, there is some implicit information in Luke’s account which has not been spelled out, but needs investigating. Remember, you need to connect the pieces together with the portions of Luke’s account before and after this segment.
An interesting point to note once more, is that Judas knows where to find Jesus. He leads the Temple Guard straight to Him. But how did he know where Jesus would be? We have alluded to that piece of information already in earlier Gems but it is worth bringing it back into focus again at the start of this portion.
This is going to be another short Gem. I don’t think it would qualify as the shortest one on record, but it will be short. Sometime I must look through the Gems to see what qualifies as the shortest and which one is the longest. I am going to leave you now to do the spade work before we start on this new pericope. Have fun with your preparation on this passage. I am sure you know there is one obvious thing to do. But for the sake of you Deeper Bible students I am not going to tell you straight off.
If you can find a path with no obstacles, it probably doesn’t lead anywhere.
