Remember this from Gem 17: Pharoah gave Joseph an Egyptian name Zaphenath – Paneah.
The meaning is “Redeemer of the Age“ or “Redeemer of the world”. That is exactly what Joseph was. Christ was also called “Redeemer of the world” by the Samaritans at the well of Sychar in John 4:42.
Many see in Joseph a type of Christ.
Note these comparisons and these are just a few:
Judah said to his brothers, “What will we gain by killing our brother? His blood would just give us a guilty conscience. Instead of hurting him, let’s sell him to those Ishmaelite traders. After all, he is our brother—our own flesh and blood!” And his brothers agreed.
Genesis 37:26-7
Then one of the twelve, named Judas Iscariot, went to the chief priests and said, “What are you willing to give me to betray Him to you?” And they weighed out thirty pieces of silver to him.
Matthew 26:14-15
Both were sold, one by Judah, the other by Judas.
Some time later, Pharaoh’s chief cup-bearer and chief baker offended their royal master. Pharaoh became angry with these two officials, and he put them in the prison where Joseph was, in the palace of the captain of the guard.
Genesis 40:1-3
At that time two robbers *were crucified with Him, one on the right and one on the left.
Matthew 27:38
Both were numbered with two transgressors; interestingly one is let go one punished in each case.
“Now let Pharaoh look for a man discerning and wise, and set him over the land of Egypt.
Genesis 41:33
Christ . . . in whom are hidden all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge.
Colossians 2:3
Both are the embodiment of wisdom. Joseph in Egypt and Jesus in all the universe.
Pharaoh said to Joseph, “See, I have set you over all the land of Egypt.”
Genesis 41:41
For this reason also, God highly exalted Him, and bestowed on Him the name which is above every name,
Philippians 2:9
Both are elevated to a place of final exaltation. Joseph in all Egypt, Jesus in all the universe.
Then Pharaoh named Joseph Zaphenath-paneah; (Redeemer of the world / Redeemer of the Age)
Genesis 41:45
and they were saying to the woman, “It is no longer because of what you said that we believe, for we have heard for ourselves and know that this One is indeed the Saviour of the world.”
John 4:42
Both are considered the Redeemer/Saviour of the world.
