Chai Shimei was a migrant worker aged 29 who met secretly with others to read the Bible in China. They were part of China’s underground church and did not have the permission of the government to meet. One afternoon they were meeting in a classroom of a school on the outskirts of Wenzhou. Security officials burst into the room and demanded the group stop. Chai Shimei was taken and ordered to urinate on the one Bible the group had between them. He refused and they beat him. They then took him outside to the long drop toilet. His ankles were bound with a rope and he was lowered into the hole, head first clutching the Bible. They tied the rope with Chai dangling just above the stinking human excrement. He was commanded to drop the Bible into the excrement but again he refused. His head was then dipped into the mess and brought out again so his tormenters could hear his response. He steadfastly refused to yield. The officers were furious and lowered him into the excrement again and again.
After twenty minutes of such treatment they heard Chai calling faintly from the pit. Listening they heard him say, “Jesus is Lord. His Word is pure, I will not defile it.” The enraged security officers released the rope, dropping Chai to his death by drowning in excrement.
