Here’s one of our own stories:
As in the days of “Exodus”
“But there was light as usual where the people of Israel lived.” Exodus 10:23
When we (Ian and Tania Vail) were packing up to leave the country where we worked in 1993 we were left with 4 days to get everything done before flying out. Time was of a premium and it would mean that we needed to work for the next four days and nights in order to get everything done. Not only did I have to finish everything needing to be done at the SIL office but also we needed to sort out our house lot of possessions, pack and clean the house before leaving.
To compound the problem we were told there were going to be blackouts over the city for the next four nights. One side of the city would be blacked out each night, starting with our side. Tania’s first reaction was “No, I can’t cope with that. We can’t do all this in only two nights. Help Lord!” Tania and I prayed that the Lord would do something to help us out of this predicament. The first night there was light as usual so we concluded that they had changed the order and the other side had the first night without lights.
The second night we had light again. We thought the authorities had changed their mind about the blackouts. Perhaps there was no need to conserve power any more. On the third night we busied ourselves as we had on the other nights and worked to complete the tasks in hand. That night another SIL couple, who lived on the other side of the city, came over to see how we were going.
They asked us, “How is it your lights are on when this side of the city is in darkness?”
We replied, “We thought the blackouts hadn’t happened.”
They told us, “The blackouts have been happening as planned. Our lights were off last night. We drove over to your side the first night and all the lights were off. Tonight, it is the same, your side is in darkness. How is it you have light?”
They took us outside to witness the fact our side of the city was in blackout. Ours was the only house in our street with the lights on. We told them we didn’t know. All we could assume was that the Lord answered our prayer in the same way He answered back at the time of the Exodus. We couldn’t explain it, but we knew one thing: we had light to finish the tasks we needed to complete before leaving while our side of the city was in complete darkness. We have no idea how He did that but we know it happened and we have a fellow SIL couple who witnessed the fact of our Land of Goshen miracle.
God answers prayer in mysterious ways.
