The afternoon of the second day it became quiet outside so Miss X crept to where she could peek out. She saw four “civilians” in the street and nobody else. They had eaten everything they had that didn’t require cooking and they were feeling very cramped, so decided to leave and go to the house of another Christian far enough from the center of town that they figured it might not have been damaged (that is where the 25 waited until the military retook the town). When they told the policeman to stand up because they were going to walk to another house, he replied that he couldn’t stand on his wounded foot, let alone walk, and he couldn’t leave without reporting to his commander. They told him, “‘You can do all things through Christ who strengthens you’ and Jesus Christ is your commander now, so you don’t need to report to anybody else.” He stood up, held his wounded arm so that nobody could see the wound (he had a short-sleeved shirt) and walked on his own the six or so blocks to the other house! They walked to the corner (where the bunker was) where the four “civilians” were standing chatting, and to their horror saw a column of 17 subversives marching toward them, less than half a block away; there were five more coming in the opposite direction toward them. When they heard the conversation between the “civilians” and the first subversive in the column, they realized the “civilians” were subversives. There they were in the middle of the street in broad daylight. Several subversives looked straight in their direction, but nobody said or did anything. The five walked right past them all and on to the house of their destination.
One night the Christians held a vigil and prayed. One of their requests was that the Lord would protect them, especially the children, from an epidemic, as the stench of death with dozens of unburied dead bodies around in the tropical heat was awful. While they were praying it started to rain. The Lord sent four strong rainstorms in a little over 24 hours’ time. Miss X said, “When the fumigators arrived from the capital, the air was already pure. just like it had been before the attack.”
