The story comes from a missionary couple working in Peru with Wycliffe Bible Translators.
They were driving along one day when they were stopped by a band of rebel guerrillas who demanded they get out of the car. “This is it,” they must have thought, since many others had died in the same situation. But much to their surprise, the rebels decided to take only their car. Then they spotted the couple’s generator and film projector and decided to take those as well. So one of the missionaries unexpectedly blurted out, “You might as well take the movies too!”
Of course the story doesn’t end there. About a year later these missionaries learned that Jorge, the leader of the rebels was in jail near the town where they were stationed. So they decided to go visit him. They wanted to express their forgiveness for what had been done and to share the love of Christ with him.
When they met Jorge they learned right away that he had become a Christian and had laid down his arms. They were astonished and asked, “How did this happen?”
“Well, one night we were bored, so we thought we would watch the movie you gave us. We were sure it would be a Rambo movie, but instead it was the story of the life of Jesus Christ. After we watched it seven times, several of us decided to follow Christ.”
