We saw yesterday when Jesus said I am the way, he was saying He is the way to the Father, to God. Jesus told them. “No one can come to the Father except through Me. If you had really known Me, you would know who My Father is. From now on, you do know Him and have seen Him!"
Philip said, "Lord, show us the Father, and we will be satisfied."
Jesus replied, "Have I been with you all this time, Philip, and yet you still don't know who I am?Anyone who has seen Me has seen the Father! So why are you asking Me to show Him to you? Don't you believe that I am in the Father and the Father is in Me? The words I speak are not My own, but My Father who lives in Me does His work through Me. Just believe that I am in the Father and the Father is in Me. Or at least believe because of the work you have seen Me do. John 14:6-11
Do you see we have John’s standard theme developing? See Jesus; see the Father. Know Jesus; Know the Father. But note a very interesting element that John develops a little later at Thomas’ expense. It seems that to believe on the basis of the acts of God is on a different level than believing God without the evidence. A foretaste of the classic
Joh 20:28 "My Lord and my God!" Thomas exclaimed.
Joh 20:29 Then Jesus told him, "You believe because you have seen Me. Blessed are those who believe without seeing Me." If you can’t believe in Me or Father without evidence or proof then at least believe on the basis of the miraculous signs you have seen.
Of course you have seen by now this theme is all through the book of John. It is like the scarlet thread in the Bible. It should come as no surprise. After all John did tell us his purpose and so it should help you make sense of John at times. Keep watching for it. It continues to the end but it is not long till we get to John 16 where I told you we will see some interesting things. But don’t hold your breath; there is more to note between now and then.
