This is the last of the I am ‘something” references in John. The equative “I am” clauses, equate Jesus with some symbolic aspect of life which connects him to Messiah and to Old Testament symbols. Have a look at them, bread of life. Living water, light of the world, the gate for the sheep, the good shepherd, the resurrection, the life, the way, the truth, and the life. And now finally the true vine. These are all very interesting. They have been lifted straight out of the Old Testament, rich with symbolism.
This last one is like a summary statement linking much of what has gone before. There is much being said here and I am going to give you time and the satisfaction to find out for yourself. Think what the vine relates to. Call it a little Bible Gem test if you want to. There you didn’t know there would be exams with Bible Gem, did you? Well not really exams as such but I really want to train you in the art of digging deeper into your Bible. So I am going to leave you on your own for this one and not tell you anything specific to do but hope that you will be able to sort at least some of it out for yourself. It is a rich and full metaphor and one that warrants a deeper focused look at it. So what are you waiting for, my work is done for the moment. Like those who taught me I need only say “dig here”.
We could turn this into a long and involved study but I won’t do that. I will leave it for you. I will make some summary comments in the next Gem. Have fun.
It’s OK to get angry with God. He can take it.
